Research at Campus OWLUnderstanding Artificial Intelligence
Whether it is a digital assistant on a smartphone or tablet, or smart speakers, just what goes on behind the scenes of AI-controlled systems usually remains hidden from their users. The concept of co-construction promises to change this: in the interchange of questions and answers, humans and intelligent systems are meant to arrive at joint explanations for the knowledge contained in these machines. Since 2021, this topic has been a major topic of research at the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre TRR 318 ‘Constructing Explainability’, a joint endeavor of Bielefeld University and Paderborn University.

Exciting discussions on science communication at the Summer Evening 2022Global Young Faculty meets Research Academy Ruhr
This year’s ‚Summer Evening‘ of the Research Academy Ruhr (RAR) took place on June 28. In the vegan restaurant “Rote Bete“ of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, a top-class panel discussed various aspects of science communication. The discussion was titled „Science Communication, Social Media & Outreach Activities: Why, How & Sharing Experiences for Postdocs“.

Interview with Dr. Eva Bosbach10 Years University of Cologne New York Office
The University of Cologne’s North America Office celebrated its 10th anniversary at the German House in New York on May 26 with a festive in-person event, featuring art, music, networking, and the panel discussion “Transatlantic Perspectives on Quantum Science and Technologies.” The honorary guest was Rector Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Axel Freimuth, heading a delegation from the University of Cologne. The DWIH team took this anniversary as an opportunity to talk with Dr. Eva Bosbach, Executive Director of the University of Cologne North America Office.

News from DFG North America“Been in America”: DFG interviews German researchers in the USA and Canada
Since November 2020, neuroscientist Dr. Jolande Fooken has been at Queens University, Kingston in the Canadian province of Ontario, where she is on a DFG research fellowship. As a member of John Randall “Randy” Flanagan’s group, she is researching “Gaze and motor control – Patterns of Coordination.”

MONOCAB-OWL – A Visionary Monorail Vehicle for a New Mobility
The project MONOCAB-OWL was initiated to create an innovative monorail vehicle for sustainable mobility in rural areas. It’s a joint project of OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and the Landeseisenbahn Lippe (e. V.).
