Science for Society – Expert Workshop on Science Communication

In two consecutive sessions, the workshop will explore both successful approaches and persistent challenges in science communication.

Session 1, “Experiences of Good Practices and Honest Failures,” will examine concrete examples and lessons learned from research and practice.

Session 2, “Learnings for Stakeholders in Innovation and Science Communication,” will broaden the discussion to the perspectives of institutions, media, public organizations, and NGOs, with a focus on identifying practical solutions and strategies.

Together, the sessions aim to explore how communication can shift public discourse from opinion-driven debates toward evidence-based understanding, while also reflecting on practices that may unintentionally undermine trust or produce adverse effects.

The first part of the workshop will bring together research findings and practical experiences in science communication, particularly in relation to misinformation, public trust, and evidence-based communication methods. Participants will discuss how the public engages with misinformation, how researchers study these dynamics, and how trust can be built and sustained in today’s information environment. The insights gathered in this session will provide the foundation for the second part of the workshop.

The second part will focus on the diverse stakeholders involved in science communication and innovation ecosystems, including academic leaders, journalists, policymakers, public institutions, and NGOs. By incorporating these perspectives, the workshop seeks to identify opportunities for more effective collaboration and communication practices across sectors.

As an outcome, the discussions will be synthesized into a white paper designed to share insights and provide orientation for practitioners and scholars alike. Equally important, the workshop aims to strengthen connections within the science communication community, foster resilience, and lay the groundwork for future multilateral collaboration.

Please note: This workshop is intended for participants working in the area of science communication or journalism. If you would like to attend, please contact ksimons@heidelberguniversity.org with a brief note of interest.
