Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP)
The Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP) is one of Europe’s leading research institutes in the field of low-temperature plasma science and its applications. Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Greifswald, Germany, INP is the largest non-university institute in Europe dedicated to low-temperature plasmas, bringing together more than 220 scientists, engineers, and specialized staff working in state-of-the-art laboratories.
As a member of the Leibniz Association, INP combines fundamental research with application-oriented development, conducting research and development from initial ideas through to prototypes. Its interdisciplinary teams of physicists, chemists, biologists, engineers, and medical scientists develop plasma-based technologies tailored to real-world challenges, while also providing feasibility studies, consultancy, and customer-specific solutions.
INP’s research activities are organized around five strategic fields: Agriculture, Bioeconomy & Environment; Plasma Medicine; Surfaces & Materials; Process & Energy Technology; and Smart Data Technologies. Across these areas, the institute advances plasma-enabled solutions ranging from sustainable agriculture and medical therapies to functional materials, decarbonized industrial processes, and AI-supported modeling and data management for plasma science.
In close collaboration with universities, research organizations, and industry partners, INP also plays an active role in training and advancing early-career researchers and technical specialists. Through this integrated approach, the institute contributes to translating scientific innovation into market-ready technologies and societal impact.
