The Art of Aging: A journey through the inside of our cells

Learn how the speaker’s intense curiosity for living things turned into discoveries that are changing how we think about aging and disease.

Liz Blackburn and Peter Walter will talk about their respective research before sitting down with Consul General Hans-Ulrich Südbeck for a fire side chat about how outside perspectives and serendipitous moments influenced their careers and what role basic, open-ended research should play in today’s world.

Join the talk with:

Prof. Elizabeth Blackburn, UCSF
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2009
for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase

Prof. Peter Walter, UCSF
2018 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences
for elucidating the unfolded protein response, a cellular quality-control system that detects disease-causing unfolded proteins and directs cells to take corrective measures

The program will conclude with a reception with a diverse audience and a view of Alcatraz.
