Following the first conference day at the United Nations, we warmly invite all registered participants of the conference to join us for a networking reception including drinks and light refreshments.

Welcoming remarks are expected to be delivered by a representative of the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations. Opening remarks on behalf of the German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH New York) will be given by Julia Helmes.

Keynote inputs will follow from Prof. Beatrix Busse (University of Cologne / EUniWell) and Prof. Portia Williams (Teachers College, Columbia University), offering a transatlantic perspective on teacher education, well-being, and science diplomacy.

Introductions will be given and the evening moderated by Dr. Eva Bosbach (University of Cologne New York Office).

This gathering offers a valuable opportunity to connect with colleagues and strengthen transatlantic collaboration at the beginning of the conference week.

Our Experts

Prof. Beatrix Busse is Professor of English Linguistics and Vice-Rector for Teaching and Studies at the University of Cologne (Germany). She is Coordinator and Chief Development Officer of the European University for Well-Being (EUniWell) and the Erasmus+ Teacher Education Academy “Teacher Education for a Future in a Flux”. She is Vice-Chair of the Executive Board of the Coimbra Group and chair of the FOREU4ALL board, which represents all 70+ European Universities Alliances. Beatrix Busse was full professor of English linguistics at Heidelberg University from 2011-2020. From 2013 to 2019 Beatrix Busse also held the position of Vice-Rector for Studies and Teaching at Heidelberg University. She is the Co-Founder of the Heidelberg School of Education and was a founding member of the DFG-funded research training group “Authority and Trust in American Culture, Society, History and Politics.” Beatrix Busse is Visiting Fellow of the British Academy and is Honorary Research Fellow at Glasgow University. She is the reviews editor of the International Journal of Corpus Linguistics. Beatrix Busse’s scholarly interests include the history of English, stylistics, corpus linguistics, language in urban space - especially in Brooklyn, New York - well-being, AI research and AI (in) education.

Prof. Portia Williams is the Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Global Affairs, and Assistant Professor (Coterminous) in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. As Vice Provost, Prof. Williams supports the establishment and realization of college-wide academic goals focused on curriculum alignment, new program development, non-credit programming, accreditation and academic affairs compliance. She also serves as the College’s chief international officer, guiding policy and practice for institutional collaboration and partnerships, as well as federal compliance and support for more that 1,500 international students and scholars. Previously, Prof. Williams served as the College’s Associate Provost for International Affairs. With more than 25 years of experience in educational programming and administration, both domestically and abroad, Prof. Williams has directed, advised, or collaborated on policy and program initiatives in North and Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, East and Southern Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and the United States. Additionally, as an ESL professional, she has held faculty appointments at Georgetown University, American University, George Washington University, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and the University of Shkodra in Albania. Prof. Williams is a former Spencer Research Fellow, David L. Boren Fellow, and Peace Corps Volunteer. She holds an Ed.D. in International Educational Development and Policy Studies and an M.Ed. in International Family and Community Education from Teachers College, as well as an M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Welcoming Remarks by

Julia Helmes
Julia Helmes is the Program Officer at the DWIH New York. She is responsible for all things event-related, including programming, planning and communications, as well as office management. Prior to joining the DWIH, Julia spent two years working for an arts non-profit in Boston, teaching visual art and creative writing, and working as an Outreach Coordinator. Julia studied literature at Barnard College, the Humboldt University in Berlin, and Trinity College Dublin where she graduated with an M.Phil. in Children’s Literature. She’s always on the lookout for a good story and thinking about ways to engage an audience.

Dr. Eva Bosbach is the Executive Director of the University of Cologne New York Office. Born in Prague, she received both her master’s and Ph.D. degree from the University of Cologne. Prior to coming to New York, she was Program Manager at the German Rectors’ Conference in Bonn, Germany, and is author of several comparative studies about doctoral education and the humanities in Germany and the U.S. Dr. Bosbach was awarded NYC Council and NY State Assembly Honorary Citations in 2017 and currently serves on the Boards of the German Centers for Research and Innovation (DWIH) New York and San Francisco. In 2024 she received a special recognition certificate as a partner of the NRW-USA Year 2023/2024
