Since 1996, the German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. New York (GACC) has been sponsoring the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa for students, apprentices and young professionals to visit the US and successfully participate in internship programs.

We support hundreds of candidates annually from coast to coast, and we are designated by the US Department of State for several industries, including the sciences, engineering, architecture, business, finance, management, commerce, journalism, law, tourism, and more.

Who qualifies?

In order to qualify for a J-1 visa in the categories Intern or Trainee, eligible candidates are either still enrolled in full-time studies towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, are still pursuing dual education training, start their internship within 12 months of graduation from such programs, or have already completed studies/vocational training and bring one year of full-time professional work experience past graduation with them when coming to the US. The GACC also supports Rechtsreferendare during their elective training periods (Wahlstation).

The impact of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa program

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa program has been attracting foreign students, apprentices and young professionals from around the world to the United States for a short-term work experience. For nearly five decades, the United States and the participating countries have found the program to be mutually beneficial. While US host companies benefit from temporary work assistance, participants gain valuable work experience. Both US citizens and J-1 visa holders benefit from the exchange of knowledge, skills and cultural insights, fostering a better understanding between nations.
