Early Career ResearchersNew UA Ruhr Committee Strengthens Careers in Science
The University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) is setting a further example for the support of researchers in early career phases with the establishment of an Early Career Researchers Board (ECR Board for short). The joint committee of Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University and the University of Duisburg-Essen strengthens the perspective of researchers in early career phases in the structural development of the alliance. Each university has nominated three members from different career stages and disciplines. The constituent meeting took place on 27 June on the Dortmund campus.

Best Paper Award for Country Report from Germany at the TRB Conference in Atlanta
From June 8-10, the TRB 7th International Conference on Roundabouts and Geometric Design took place in Atlanta, Georgia, with around 370 participants from over 20 countries. From Germany, Prof. Kerstin Lemke (University of Siegen), Dr. Marco Irzik (BASt) and Dr. Matthias Zimmermann (KIT) took part in the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Conference.

Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche announces the winners of the Startup Factories lighthouse competition. UoC and partners’ Gateway Factory receives up to ten million euros as a joint venture of the participating universities to promote deep-tech startups.

DWIH Founders Summit in Cologne

With their worldwide start-up programmes, the German Centres for Research and Innovation (DWIH) support German scientists in turning their research into viable business models. At the first DWIH Founders Summit in Cologne at the end of June, alumni of the start-up support programmes CITRIS and the GUILD Academy of the DWIH San Francisco shared their experiences—and what German universities can learn from the international start-up ecosystems.

News from Heidelberg UniversityHeidelberg University Confers James W.C. Pennington Award
Professor Lerone A. Martin, Ph.D., professor of religious studies at Stanford University (USA), is the recipient of this year’s James W.C. Pennington Award of Heidelberg University. The scholar is being honored for his ground-breaking studies in African American history. The award, presented by the Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) and the Faculty of Theology, commemorates the American pastor and former slave, James W.C. Pennington. In 1849 he received an honorary doctorate from Ruperto Carola, making him the first African American to be honored by a European university in this way.
