On 2 February 2025, in the midst of the Arctic winter, the temperature at the North Pole was a tad over freezing. Global warming has already dramatically changed the Arctic. By 2100, temperatures the world over will rise an average of 2.7 degrees, even if all countries keep their climate pledges. Prof. Dr. Dirk Notz from the Cluster of Excellence Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CLICCS) at the University of Hamburg and Prof. Dr. Julienne Stroeve from the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado (US) are now showing us the consequences—from vanishing sea ice and melting glaciers to thawing permafrost soils.

Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) Is on Its Way to Chile
Researchers from the University of Cologne, as part of an international scientific consortium, co-planned and assembled the telescope that started its journey from the port of Wesel via Antwerp to its new location in Chile. With a novel optical design with 2 mirrors of diameter of six metres, innovative instruments and unique site, it will be one of the most powerful survey telescopes in the world at submillimeter wavelengths.
